Susan Lipman was elected to the National PTA Board of Directors in June 2012. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she currently lives in West Islip, NY on Long Island. Susan obtained her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from St. John’s University, a master’s degree from Adelphi University and is a New York State N-6 certified teacher. She taught in city parochial schools before starting her family.
Susan’s PTA activities began in 1986 when her son started kindergarten. She has held leadership positions at the local unit, council, region and state levels over the years, culminating with service as the New York State PTA President from 2008-2010. She continues to participate at all those levels in support and advisory capacities.
PTA helped Susan to develop strong skills that enabled her to run for the West Islip Board of Education in 1994 where she served until 2006 with three years as Board President. Elected in 2005, she remains a member of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services) Board of Education. She is also the first Vice President of R.E.F.I.T. (Reform Educational Financing Inequities Today) a consortium of school districts fighting for equitable funding.
Susan’s community involvement included years as a religious education teacher, participation with her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, as a Boy Scout merit badge counselor and committee chairperson for her son’s troop where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
With a commitment to education and the health and well-being of children, Susan draws on her upbringing, personal educational experiences and professional background in passionately advocating for the best educational opportunities for every child.
Susan’s husband, Jay, is a financial advisor and insurance representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. They have two adult children, Timothy and Sarah, and their first grandchild on the way.
