PTA will use its voice nationally to ensure equity for all children by educating and training its grasstops and grassroots leaders to support the common core state standards. PTA will focus intensive mobilization efforts in four states including: Georgia, Florida, New Jersey. and North Carolina.
PTA’s efforts to advance the common core state standards will build on PTA’s rich history in advocating for key education, health and child welfare reforms, while complementing PTA’s current Public Policy Agenda.
PTA’s efforts are supported generously by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The development and implementation of the common core standards is a state-level effort, lead by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association. As of November 2009, 48 states and three territories have signed a Memorandum of Agreement in support the common core standards.
The goal of the common core state standards is to create a set of fewer, clearer and higher common standards will be adopted that are evidence and research-based and internationally benchmarked. These common standards will set clear expectations to help parents understand what their children should be able to know and do, will ensure equity for every student – regardless of income or geography, and will help teachers know what to teach.
